File Prep Guide for DTF Transfers – Ensure Perfect Prints Every Time

Preparing your artwork correctly is one of the most important steps in getting the best possible Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfer results. At Printholix, we want to make sure your prints are vibrant, durable, and exactly what you expect — which starts with properly formatted files. This file preparation guide will walk you through everything you need to know before uploading your artwork and placing an order.

Accepted File Formats

We accept the following file types for DTF transfer printing:

  • PNG (preferred)

  • TIFF

  • PSD (Adobe Photoshop)

  • PDF

Your file should have a transparent background unless you specifically want color in the background. PNG files are preferred because they preserve transparency and high resolution, making them ideal for DTF printing.

Resolution and Canvas Size

To ensure sharp, professional results, your file must meet the following resolution and sizing standards:

  • Minimum resolution: 300 DPI (dots per inch)

  • Design size: Match your gang sheet dimensions (for example, 22.5 inches wide by the custom length you’re ordering)

  • Units: Always design in inches, not pixels

  • Bleeds/margins: Leave at least 0.25" of space around the edges if your design runs close to the borders

Files that are low-resolution or incorrectly sized may appear blurry or pixelated when printed, which can lead to disappointing results. High-resolution, correctly sized artwork guarantees that your transfer looks clean, sharp, and vibrant on garments.

Design Setup Guidelines

To avoid issues during production, please follow these essential guidelines:

  • Convert all text to outlines (or flatten your text layers)

  • Do not mirror or flip your artwork — we print it exactly as submitted

  • Avoid any low-resolution elements, screenshots, or compressed images

  • Keep important design elements away from the edges to prevent accidental trimming

Color Mode and Transparency

DTF prints use white ink, but it will only be printed in the areas you include in your file. Here's how to make sure your design prints correctly:

  • Use RGB color mode (this gives you more vibrant colors than CMYK for DTF)

  • Make sure the background is transparent — not white unless you want white ink printed

  • If you want certain areas to appear white in your final print, those parts must be visible in the artwork

  • Avoid semi-transparent effects or drop shadows, as they may not print cleanly

Uploading Your File

When uploading your file, make sure you're sending us exactly what you want printed:

  • Do not zip, compress, or bundle files — upload a single, final file

  • File size should be under 200MB

  • Double-check your canvas size and resolution before uploading

  • We do not make changes to artwork once it's submitted, so make sure everything is final
